Departure ceremonies were a simple affair, with the wives coming out to see the two off. Before departure, quite a few family and friends thought they were out of their minds. Flying cross-country in a single engine Cessna is not for the faint of heart, let alone two self-described older gentlemen.
A valley in Arizona turned out to be one of the high points of the trip. Although not originally on the planned route, the pilots took the recommendation of several locals and made a right turn off their course. Their reward was some of the most spectacular scenery in the Southwest.
The trip was an adventure for these fair weather, Florida residents. A Montana morning greeted them with frost and a reminder that it gets darn cold up north. As lifelong "flat-landers" neither pilot had ever even seen a large mountain, yet alone flown over a range as massive as the Sierras. The flight was graced by good weather and they saw enough snow-capped, purple mountains majesty to last a lifetime.
